Switzerland’s Federal Council is prioritizing the enhancement of freight shipping along the Rhine, with millions allocated for various initiatives. They have proposed a dispatch to parliament regarding the Goods Transport Act, aiming to support both Rhine-based freight shipping and port infrastructure through federal government funding. Key measures include establishing the legal framework for promoting fossil-free propulsion in freight shipping and shunting locomotives, reinforcing the synergy between rail, waterway, and road logistics, and allocating additional funds to railways.
Additionally, the plan includes the introduction of digital automatic coupling (DAK) in rail freight transportation, streamlining operations and reducing costs with a one-time investment of CHF 180 million. The modernization of single wagonload transport, deemed economically unsustainable in its current state, will receive subsidies for eight years. The initial request for the first four years is CHF 260 million, with continuous funding planned for transhipment, loading contributions, and compensation for uncovered freight transport costs, amounting to CHF 60 million annually.
