Rhine Alpine Talk 16: Shaping the Corridor from a Regional Perspective
This Rhine-Alpine-Talk is focusing on the evolving dynamics of European transport and regional planning. The bottom-up approach of the EGTC enables it to facilitate between regional and macroregional actors and the merits of such a strategy approach will be part of the discussion. Invitation to demonstration of added buoyancy concepts for inland waterway vessels – Duisburg, 25th of January
The Rhine-Alpine Corridor has an annual cargo throughput of 1 billion tonnes and provides an efficient network for road, rail and inland waterway transport. Recent low water periods, however, have deteriorated the trust in the inland waterway network resilience. This is detrimental to the international goal of shifting traffic to inland waterways to reduce road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. Even a reverse modal shift is possible as a result.
This is one of the challenges being tackled in the H2020 project NOVIMOVE. Smart & Sustainable waterways. While newbuilt ships with low draught and optimised propulsion are addressed in other projects, NOVIMOVE focusses on added buoyancy concepts to temporarily increase cargo capacity of existing and new ships. Two of these concepts, namely so-called pipe-based buoyancy and retractable side-boxes will be demonstrated with a remote-controlled scale model in DST’s large shallow water basin.

Gotthard Base Tunnel Spurs Growth in Rail Travel

The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) and Ceneri Base Tunnel have transformed transportation and development along the Gotthard axis. According to the latest „Monitoring Gotthard axis“ (MGA) report from the Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE):
- From 2016 to 2019, rail passenger numbers increased by 28%, while road travel declined by 2%.
- Post-pandemic in 2022, rail travel surged by 48%, with 4,000 more daily travelers compared to 2016. Road travel also increased by 8%, primarily driven by tourism.
- The shift from road to rail in freight transport was evident, with a 38% increase in container handling in Ticino terminals since 2016.
- Improved accessibility from the Ceneri Base Tunnel stimulated economic and demographic growth, particularly in the Bellinzona conurbation and Uri canton, fostering increased commuter flows.
The „Gotthard axis monitoring“ project by ARE, FOT, FEDRO, FOEN, and the cantons of Ticino and Uri has been analyzing the impact of railway expansion since 2015. Phase B results from 2016 to 2022 were influenced by COVID-19 but not the GBT closure in August 2023, which will be examined in Phase C starting in 2025.
