Rhine Alpine Talk #15 Perspectives of the Merger – Towards a new North-Sea-Rhine-Mediterranean Corridor
The 15th edition of the Rhine Alpine Talks on October 13th 11.00 – 12.30 h, tackles the topic of the upcoming Merger of the two TEN-T corridors and the resulting consequences and ramifications for the corridor stakeholders. The integration of the nine Core Network Corridors with the eleven Rail Freight Corridors in a common set of ‘European Transport Corridors’ constitutes a major element of the revised TEN-T proposal. The Rhine-Alpine Corridor is proposed to be merged with the North Sea-Mediterranean Corridor to form one major European transport corridor.
While striving for maximum stability of the existing TEN-T network, this merger brings certain challenges such as the identification of an extended core network, which has been fully integrated into the corridors.
The purpose of this event is to enable key stakeholders of the corridor to present their perspectives and expectations on the upcoming merger from their unique positions, be it from a regional, macroregional, transport, or logistics point-of-view.
This event is held in an online roundtable format with 4-5 participants and one moderator, wherein a discussion follows after opening statements of each participant (3-4 minutes each).

EGTC staff extension: Erwin van der Linden

Erwin van der Linden has recently joined the EGTC team. As of September, his main responsibility will be the MultiRELOAD Horizon funded innovation project for the next two years. “I am delighted to be joining the EGTC office in this new role,” says Van der Linden. “I have been involved in the Horizon family of projects for a number of years now, particularly in the inland waterways community with projects such as the semi-autonomous inland navigation vessel project NOVIMAR, the waterborne transport optimisation project NOVIMOVE and dissemination activities related to policy related projects such as PLATINA3. It feels only natural to build on these existing networks and extend the scope of my work from inland waterways to multimodality. And did I mention my involvement in the RH2INE project already, which focuses on the cross-border implementation of hydrogen through standardisation along the Rhine corridor? All in all, there are quite some synergies to be made.”
The EGTC’s main task within MultiRELOAD will be to translate a set of innovations, focused on removing bottlenecks to further unlock the trimodal potential of inland ports, into policy framework discussions. “MultiRELOAD’s innovations on Smart multimodal logistics, Digital and Automated Multimodal Nodes and Corridors and Innovative Business model have the potential to decrease operational costs, increase efficiency, facilitate modal shift and further shape the policy framework in which multimodality can flourish on the continent at the same time,” says Van der Linden confidently, only to add: “Frankly, I think multimodality holds the key to a much-needed greener and more efficient freight transport system in Europe. The EGTC team is in a unique position to champion this proposal and work on the right conditions to make it a reality. I look forward to contributing to this end”.

RH2INE update

The annual conference of the RH2INE Hydrogen Implementation Network of Excellence took place at the end of September. More than 100 participants from industry, knowledge institutions and government agencies gathered in The Hague to share knowledge, best practices and future ambitions, with the common goal of strengthening alignment on cross-border hydrogen-related developments.
The session was chaired by Jeanette Baljeu, Regional Minister of the Province of Zuid-Holland, and Michael Theben, Head of Department Climate Protection Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Three dedicated workshops in the morning covered topics such as new business opportunities for hydrogen shipping, port infrastructure and the next steps to be taken to establish a secretariat with dedicated staff to support the RH2INE initiative from a multi-year and structural perspective.
The results of these workshops were shared with the plenary group in the afternoon. Keynote speeches were given by a number of experts, including Paweł Wojciechowski, European Coordinator for the Rhine-Alpine Core Network Corridor. His presence ensures that the concerns and best practices shared by the ever-growing RH2INE membership are elevated to the much-needed EU level. The afternoon concluded with the celebration of BASF as the latest company to join the RH2INE initiative.
