North Rhine-Westphalia: Inland ports with lower throughput

The ports in the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia report an 8% lower throughput in 2020, compared to 2019. The reduction is apparently caused by the Covid-19 crisis. Since the state includes Duisburg and other larger ports with a combined turnover of more than 100 million tons, the tendency may represent the whole of inland navigation along the Rhine axis.
The detailed figures can be found here (external link, German language). A previous decline, very visible in the report from data of some years ago, is caused by the decision that ended coal mining within the state. Shipping of other commodities has been fairly constant.
Antwerp: MSC company train to Vienna

The port of Antwerp is now connected to Vienna by an intermodal train, operating four times per week exclusively for MSC shipping line, and carrying overseas container. The detailed statement by MSC Austria can be found here (external link). It shows a strong commitment to transport via the North Sea ports.
To MSC, the location of Vienna and the rest of Austria makes Trieste a natural choice for traffic to and from the Far East. Nevertheless, the new Antwerp train helps with connections to and from all the rest of the world. This train uses the Rhine-Alpine corridor between Antwerp and the Frankfurt area.
