Targeted Analysis proposal approved by ESPON EGTC

We are thrilled to announce our Targeted Analysis (TA) proposal, submitted during the open invitation ending March 29th, has been officially approved by the ESPON EGTC.
The project, titled “Policy Rethink: Enhanced Planning and Governance for NorthSea-Rhine-Mediterranean Corridor” (PREPARED) has the goal of establishing a common spatial and governance approach together with players in the western corridor strand and the spaces in between.
The aim is to develop and visualize a common vision and perspectives in order to make the best of the Corridor merger at regional, transnational and European level. The corridor merger provides an opportunity to overcome cross-border bottlenecks and strengthen East-West railway connections. This represents added value for all stakeholders involved including how to valorise the merged corridor with regard to exploiting funding opportunities.
With this TA we hope to form the basis for facilitating connections with new territories and partners in the eastern and western part of the new corridor and stimulate development of an integrated governance approach, considering all policy levels from the local to European.

German aid for the expansion of rail freight transport approved by EC

The German government issued a request to the European Commission (EC) for financial assistance for railway companies to pay some of their high operating costs. The goal is to encourage the transition of goods transportation from road to rail. According to the EC’s decision, the help will take the form of direct subsidies. The maximum annual investment is 320 million euros, with a total budget of 1.7 billion euros for the scheme’s five-year duration, which runs until 2029.
Germany may offer financial assistance for both single and grouped wagonload transportation. In the case of single wagonload transit, individual waggons or waggon groups from various consignors with distinct destinations are combined to form a train. In contrast, grouped waggon transport keeps the same composition from point of departure to point of destination and is eligible for funding under the scheme for travels of up to 300 km.
In its assessment of the request, the Commission determined that the measure is necessary and reasonable for promoting and maintaining the modal shift from road to rail, which has substantial operational costs. Furthermore, the scheme is deemed appropriate because it is limited to the bare minimum of necessary support, keeping it below the ceilings outlined in the Railway Guidelines.
Once all difficulties regarding the preservation of sensitive data have been resolved, a non-confidential version of the EC ruling can be obtained from the State Aid Register using the number SA.108800. (UV)
