Rhine Alpine Talk 17: Unlocking the Potential of Rail Freight, Innovations and Challenges
Rail freight is a superior choice for green transport compared to road, playing a crucial role in achieving decongestion and striving for modal shift goals. However, rail freight transport faces its own challenges, including cross-border interoperability and intermodal connections. Investments and innovations are essential to unlocking its full potential within the wider context of multimodal logistics.
In the upcoming Rhine-Alpine Talks (RAT) session, 28th of June starting from 11.00h, we are eager to share and discuss insights from key players in the rail freight industry. Real case studies from the Horizon Europe-funded innovation project MultiRELOAD, on smart multimodal logistics as well as digital multimodal nodes, will be presented.
These cases aim to inspire attendees and challenge them to consider which potential regulatory frameworks still need to be addressed to advance innovations to the next phase.
Save the date and join us to learn from industry leaders, including representatives from duisport, the Province of Limburg, CargoBeamer, among others. This event promises valuable discussions and opportunities to contribute to the future of rail freight.

Deutschlandticket: New study shows that a 10% increase in public transport would save €19 billion

Using the latest available data from the EU Commission for 2020 to assess what could happen if 10% of traffic were shifted to public transport, a study claims that €19 billion and 5.8 million tonnes of CO2 could be saved.
The study published by the Forum Ökologisch-Soziale Marktwirtschaft (FÖS) shows that even relatively small investments in public transport can lead to large savings in terms of social cost.
The Climate Alliance Germany, AWO Bundesverband, and the ecological transport club VCD are urging the federal government to maintain its pledges, including doubling passenger numbers, launching an expansion and modernization contract for public transport, and securing the 49-euro ticket in the long run. Car accidents, exhaust fumes, and noise, as well as environmental and climate harm, all carry significant socioeconomic costs.

ALICE White Paper “AI in Logistics”
Symbolic picture by Steve Johnson on Unsplash
The ALICE white paper “AI in Logistics” examines how AI could change European logistics. It covers AI fundamentals, logistical applications across domains, and implementation problems and prospects. Offering industry stakeholders insights, guidance, and inspiration on how to apply AI to transform logistics operations. The EU’s supportive policies help AI grow, propelling the logistics industry towards efficiency, sustainability, and innovation.
The white paper shows how AI is applied in ports, intralogistics, and transport management. AI-powered container recognition, intelligent warehouse robots, and real-time traffic forecasting for optimal routes are examples. These applications show the AI’s adaptability in improving operational efficiency and decision-making by perceiving, thinking, and acting. AI’s contributions to production schedule optimisation, intralogistics, and port automation are significant.
Implementation challenges: The white paper addresses cost, data availability, and privacy difficulties when integrating AI in logistics.
It offers practical advice on how to overcome these problems, recommending a staged strategy that builds AI capabilities from tiny use cases.
