Boom of climate-friendly night-trains

The night train business is booming again since a few years because more and more people are opting for climate-friendly travel. Compared to flying, train travel is very climate-friendly – and at night there is more demand than ever. End of 2016, Deutsche Bahn ended its night trains offer due to unprofitability. Today, foreign railway companies such as ÖBB, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), France’s SNCF or the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) operate night trains in Germany and are profitable with this business. As the demand is further growing, numerous private providers step in. This development can be one of many steps to decarbonization of mobility. Ban on new petrol, diesel cars by 2035 – A success for climate protection?

Last week, on 8 June, the European Parliament voted for a total ban on new CO2-emitting vehicles by 2035. The law is not yet final, it confirms the parliament’s position for upcoming negotiations with EU countries on the final law. Although the vote was received widely positively concerning its climate protection role, there are also critical reactions on the same. Thus, a plan with which new vehicles using internal combustion engines will roll off the assembly line in Europe after the 1.5 degree limit has been exceeded cannot be considered a climate protection success, the critiques say.

Connecting Europe Days 2022 in Lyon

The Connecting Europe Days 2022 (CED), Europe’s mobility flagship event, will take place from 28 to 30 June in Lyon, France. According to the programme of the opening session, Commissioner Adina Vălean, Director-General Henrik Hololei, Chair of the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee Karima Delli, and representatives from the French Presidency of the Council of the EU will focus on the latest political developments, including the war in Ukraine and their consequences for the transport sector and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Rhine-Alpine Corridor meeting at the CED will take place on 28 June 2022 from 16.00 – 17.15 h. After a presentation of the draft 5th Work Plan for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor by Coordinator Paweł Wojciechowski, a panel discussion on challenges for the Rhine Alpine Corridor caused by latest geopolitical developments will be held.
