ETCS Level 2 tests commenced and ongoing in Italy

New tests for the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 have commenced in northern Italy, led by Railpool, Alstom, and Captrain along the Rho-Trecate line.
These ESC check tests aim to verify compatibility on sections equipped with both ETCS L1 LS and L2 and are expected to last about a month, after which Alstom will apply for a new APOM. The ETCS L2 allows continuous communication, enabling real-time monitoring of trains, unlike ETCS L1.
Despite a currently stable situation thanks to the infrastructure manager RFI, there are concerns over the complexity of test run organisation and rising costs, which some industry associations believe may outweigh the benefits of ETCS deployment.
