Deutsche Bahn opens new tracks between Germany and Switzerland

On April 29, 2024, Deutsche Bahn (DB) opened a new set of tracks for freight traffic at the border crossing between Weil am Rhein in Germany and Basel in Switzerland, marking a significant milestone in the four-track expansion of the Rhine Valley Railway between Karlsruhe and Basel.
DB has built six new tracks parallel to the existing Rhine Valley railway between Weil am Rhein station in Germany and the River Wiese in Basel, Switzerland: two of these will be used as through tracks for freight traffic in the future, while the other four will be used for customs clearance and changing locomotives and staff for goods trains.
They constructed approximately twelve kilometres of track for the new cross-border group of tracks, renovated the railway bridge above Neuhausstrasse. And to protect surrounding neighbours from noise, two new noise barriers totaling around 780 metres in the track group area were installed.
To limit disturbance to rail traffic, DB is installing the new infrastructure in Knoten Basel in stages and progressively bringing finished sections of the system online. The new track group will be connected to Badischer Bahnhof in Basel by a temporary siding. From 2028, the two through tracks will travel over the River Wiese bridge, which is now under construction.
