On the day of the Intergovernmental Conference on Turin-Lyon, the Piedmont Region welcomed the announcement from Brussels that Europe would contribute EUR 44.5 million, or 50% of the expenditures, toward the first stage of rebuilding the 21.5 kilometres of railway between Bussoleno and Avigliana.

The project involves enhancing the cross-border connection between Lyon and Turin by contributing to the improvement of the performance and capacity of an existing or new line, including the elimination of level crossings. Capacity in nodes is expected to expand with the implementation of new technology installations for the control of traffic on the Bussoleno-Avigliana segment.

The electrification system will be upgraded by improving the line power supply system through the building of two new electrical substations in Avigliana and Borgone.

With regard to the Intergovernmental Conference, the Councillor for Transport Marco Gabusi pointed out that “Europe has recognised that Italy is on schedule as far as the national section is concerned. As was made clear at the last meeting of the Observatory, in the coming months the municipalities will be able to present projects to be financed with the 44-million-euro quota for accompanying works. The Region of Piedmont is at the side of the local authorities to accompany them along this path, which must serve the complete realisation of the works that we like to consider of revitalisation and enhancement for the territory”.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges: the first methanol bunkering operation

The first methanol bunkering operation at SEA-Tank’s terminal, the Bevrijdingsdok, was conducted in early June. 475 mT (metric tonnes) of methanol were bunkered onto the oil tanker Stena Pro Marine by the inland navigation vessel Tamariva. Every year, ships bunker at the port more than six million tonnes of conventional fuels like gas oil or low-sulphur oil. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges plans to provide alternative fuels including hydrogen, ammonia, and ultimately methanol to the port.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges is actively exploring the use of low-carbon fuels in order to maintain its status as a leading bunkering port worldwide. In order to facilitate bunkering operations and investment decisions, the Port Authority is creating a clear framework for shipping firms, bunkering companies, industries, and terminals. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is dedicated to making its fleet more environmentally friendly by utilizing alternative fuels, and will provide facilities where possible and make both platforms multi-fuel ready.

The Port of Duisburg is making additional efforts to aid the regional economy while it transitions to climate-neutral energy sources. Duisport and Lhyfe GmbH are examining the viability of constructing the first significant electrolysis plant in the Port of Duisburg. Lhyfe GmbH is a pioneer in the generation of renewable green hydrogen from Cologne. The Duisburger Verkehrs- und Versorgungsgesellschaft (DVV), Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg (WBD), and Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT) are potential customers of the 100 percent green hydrogen. A related letter of intent has been signed by the involved partners. For its hydrogen-powered buses, DVV will use the sustainable energy carrier; for its hydrogen-powered garbage collection vehicles, WBD; and for port-internal logistics and the DGT’s operation, Duisport.

Lhyfe established Duisburg Hydrogen GmbH to carry out the project, and it will start with a feasibility assessment. The up to 20 megawatt hydrogen production plant, to be constructed in Duisburg-Hochfeld’s outer harbour on land owned by Duisburger Hafen AG, might be operational by 2025.
