Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has completed the first commercial test trains through the reopened western bore of Switzerland’s Gotthard Base Tunnel, running the 05.30 Chiasso – Basle passenger service and a freight train from Ludwigshafen to Gallarate. Trial running will follow a similar approach to the 2016 opening, with trains running north to south through the western bore. SBB plans for the full reopening on September 2, with a half-hourly passenger service and resumption of freight services.
The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board identified a broken wheel type as the cause of the accident that happened a year ago. The Federal Office of Transport (BAV) contacted wagon keepers and the European Railway Agency (ERA) for international measures. The Joint Networks Secretariat(JNS) recommended downgrading wheel types with increased risks and introducing larger minimum wheel diameters.
The BAV will inform Switzerland’s stakeholders about JNS measures and instruct immediate implementation, while national supervisory authorities will inform European players.
