„Connecting Europe Express“ Providing a Platform for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor EGTC on the Route from Basel to Frankfurt

On 28 September 2021, the „Connecting Europe Express CEE” travelled on the Upper Rhine, the central part of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor from Basel-Karlsruhe-Frankfurt. The CEE is an initiative of the EU in the European Year of Rail – a train crossing 26 countries since 2 September. Its role is to make better understand the challenges that European rail has to overcome in order to become the mode of choice for passengers and businesses alike.

Departing from Basel after a short meeting with the Swiss Forum Train Europe – connecting Europe, three of our members – the City of Lahr, the Port of Strasbourg and the Regional Association Rhine-Neckar – presented their projects on route from Basel to Karlsruhe.

At the stop in Karlsruhe, the political representatives of the city, the region, the Land and DB emphasized the challenges with the urban node of Karlsruhe as a crossing of two main European TEN-T corridors.

Workshop “Characteristics and governance of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor”

On the route from Karlsruhe to Frankfurt, we held our workshop on “Characteristics and governance of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor”, moderated by Pawel Wojciechowski, European Coordinator for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor. High level representatives of the European Commission, DG MOVE, DB and the EGTC discussed the upcoming challenges in the development of our corridor and the benefits to be expected from a closer cooperation among the participants. As Herald Ruijters pointed our this will also facilitate an effective implementation of the Directive on streamlining measures for advancing the realisation of the TEN-T network.

Arriving at Frankfurt Main Station, the CEE and its passengers were welcomed by representatives of the city of Frankfurt and Rouven Kötter, Vice Chair of the EGTC and Deputy Director of the Regionalverband FrankfurtRheinMain.

Next Stops of the CEE in the Rhine-Alpine Corridor: Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Roosendaal-Antwerp

Our Dutch members look forward to welcoming you on-board of the CEE on 4 October 2021 on the route from Amsterdam to Antwerp with a “Wake-up call for rail freight”, chaired by Pawel Wojciechowski. During the stop in the Rotterdam Central Station, you can visit the marketplace of the Dutch railway sector. On the route Rotterdam-Roosendaal-Antwerp, a panel discussion titled “Rail freight, the future is ours” will be chaired by the European coordinator Motorways by the Sea, Kurt Bodewig.
