Starting 8 April, DB Netz AG will close freight transport route on the Rhine-Alpine corridor near Mannheim, Karlsruhe and Freiburg for 17 days. 1,000 DB Cargo trains alone are affected, a good quarter have to take long rerouting, either via France or Austria, and 280 have already been canceled as a precaution. DB Netz AG refers to constructions works on different stretches of the route as the reason for these disruptions. The construction site management of DB Netz AG caused a lot of trouble for freight railways already in 2021. On the most important freight route Rotterdam-Genoa, Deutsche Bahn repeatedly built parallel work on the main line and on possible alternative routes. On the other hand, Deutsche Bahn sees the higher speed in the expansion and new construction of railway lines compared to the past years as positive. Thereby, Deutsche Bahn spent all the money from the federal budget for the expansion of the rail network in 2021. In addition, the leftovers from previous years have been reduced by half a billion euros and thus almost 60 percent.

Consultation period is from 30 March 2022 – 22 June 2022. All relevant stakeholders at all levels shall be consulted as the measures to be proposed could require implementation by several stakeholder groups such as public administration, rail infrastructure managers, allocation bodies, rail regulatory bodies, railway undertakings, etc. For more information and the link to the questionnaire, see: https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/13134-International-freight-and-passenger-transport-increasing-the-share-of-rail-traffic/public-consultation_en

The official handover of office from the former director of the Interregional Alliance for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor (EGTC) Jörg Saalbach to the new director Dr. Cecilia Braun took place in Mannheim on 1 April 2022. Although the change was already effective as of January 2022, the pandemic situation did not allow an official physical meeting for handover at the EGTC seat, hosted by the member Verband Region Rhein-Neckar (VRRN). Ralph Schlusche, director of VRRN thanked Jörg Saalbach for his great work in developing and establishing the EGTC in his office period from 2015-2021. Thus, since its founding in 2015, the EGTC represented local, regional and port authorities along the TEN-T core network corridor Rhine-Alpine and has grown from 10 to 26 members. The EGTC has gained recognition and reputation as an important stakeholder in Corridor development and became an esteemed voice for its members in Brussels and elsewhere. He then welcomed the successor in the office of EGTC director, Dr. Cecilia Braun and ensured her best support in further shaping the success story of the EGTC.
