On 18 October 2022, Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo proposed a revision of the country’s federal hydrogen strategy during a visit to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The planned modification, which includes the establishment of a federal hydrogen council, aligns with the government’s broader energy objective of achieving the European goal of climate neutrality. Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ strategy and projects for the importation, production and throughput of green hydrogen makes it an essential player in Belgium’s ambition to become European’s hydrogen hub. The federal hydrogen strategy was approved late last year and is part of the transition to 100% renewable energy and climate neutrality. One of the goals of the strategy is to position Belgium as an import and transit hub in Europe for green hydrogen. As a world port, Port of Antwerp-Bruges sees a key role for itself in the import, local production, processing and throughput of green hydrogen and hydrogen carriers (such as ammonia and methanol) to the hinterland. To this end, the port is working to expand terminal capacity for existing and new hydrogen carriers at both port sites. In addition, the government is funding a network of hydrogen pipelines that will connect ports to Belgian industrial areas and Germany by 2028.

On a return visit to the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure after 4 years, the European Coordinator for the Rhine-Alpine core network corridor, Pawel Wojciechowski was invited to inspect the infrastructure construction sites underway, central to the investment programme designed to relaunch inland connections between Liguria and Central Southern Europe. The range of major rail infrastructure works underway, together with the forthcoming construction of the new breakwater to upgrade accessibility by sea to Genoa, are an integral part of the overall transport policies of the EU within the completion of the TEN-T Rhine-Alpine Corridor, Europe’s leading multimodal corridor in terms of GNP and population size, with Genoa indicated as the southern port of call of the corridor and as maritime gateway to this vibrant European catchment area. The European Coordinator’s full schedule finished off with a meeting at the Port Authority historic headquarters of Palazzo San Giorgio, hosted by the Port President Paolo Emilio Signorini flanked by the local authorities and stakeholders, which spotlighted the 3-billion euro Ports of Genoa investment programme underway, a major step in establishing the greater intermodal integration of the Ligurian port within the trans-European Rhine-Alpine corridor across the Terzo Valico (Third Railway Line across the Apennines).

On Thursday, 13 October, the results of the first SURE Eurodelta study on sustainable mobility in the Amsterdam-Brussels-Cologne-Lille area were presented in the house of the Benelux Unie in Brussel. Substantial growth in mobility is expected in this so-called megaregion, also known as the Eurodelta. The outcome of the study should help the governments of these four countries set a joint agenda, so they can work together on sustainable economic development in this region, which is of vital importance to Europe. At the presentation of the results in Brussels, several governments indicated their commitment to taking action based on the findings of the report. During the meeting in Brussels, the urgency of the task ahead and the proposed measures were both recognised and embraced by the speakers and the guests, giving plenty of opportunity to discuss the implementation of the measures at European, national, regional or local level. Dr. Cecilia Braun, the Director of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor EGTC joined to discuss how to reach the zero-emission goal of the European Green Deal and how to improve connectivity for people and goods in the Eurodelta.
