Press Release | 03 December 2021 |
In course of the Rhine-Alpine Talks held online 11.00 – 12.30 at Friday 3rd December, the Chair of the EGTC Jeannette Baljeu presented the roadmap to the public and handed over the first printout to Pawel Wojciechowski, the European Coordinator for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor. With the roadmap, the Rhine-Alpine corridor is aiming to become the first European carbon neutral transport corridor.
The Rhine-Alpine Corridor is the most busy transport corridor in Europe. It contains very innovative regions that actively engage in the shift to sustainable transport. Therefore, the partners are aiming at making the Corridor carbon neutral and become a frontrunner in greening transport and mobility.
The various targets set out for the EU, such as in the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy (SSMS), and the Fit for 55 package aim to decarbonise all modes of transport, boosting the uptake of zero-emissions vehicles, renewable and low-carbon fuels and related infrastructure, zero emissions ports, making interurban and urban mobility sustainable and freight green.
With the energy transition taking shape it is a good momentum to join efforts along the Corridor.
This roadmap by the EGTC proposes several specific steps to accelerate the development of a strategy to significantly step up efforts to green the Rhine-Alpine Corridor in order to attain the climate change goals, as set in the European Green Deal.
The roadmap will define the corridor agenda from a regional perspective. The EGTC members are proud of this common agenda, a guideline towards system integration of clean corridor transport. They are asking for support for projects considered relevant for greening the corridor thus acting as catalyst for efficient transformation processes. Project owners will find ambassadors within the EGTC members in helping achieve the project goals It is envisioned that this integrated approach will serve as a frontrunner living lab for other TEN-T corridors and strengthen the cooperation with the RALP corridor.

In this edition of the Rhine-Alpine Talks, the presentation and handover of the roadmap was followed by a keynote on the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy of the EU by Filip-Alexandru Negreanu-Arboreanu, Responsible for this Strategy in the Cabinet of the EU-Commissioner for Transport Adina Vălean. He confirmed the full support of Commissioner Vălean for the EGTC’s endeavors to become the first carbon neutral transport corridor. Examples of lighthouse projects by EGTC members in ports, cities and regions of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor completed the event. The Interregional Alliance for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor EGTC was founded in 2015 for regional and municipal contribution to the development of this most important of the nine EU core network corridors. The EGTC currently has 26 members – municipalities, regions and provinces, inland ports, seaports and a chamber organisation – from six countries along the corridor. This type of cooperation in core network corridor is unique to date. Pawel Wojciechowski values the EGTC “as a key partner linking the development of the European transport network with regional and local interests and development prospects”. He appreciates taking the role of an ambassador for the EGTC’s roadmap and to jointly promote related activities.
