Middle rhine ready for deeper channel

In parts of the Middle Rhine, the navigation channel is less deep than along the rest of the Rhine. To deepen the navigation channel, first excavation tests are scheduled for autumn. They are to find the best technology as well as suitable noise protection. Meanwhile, the first round of citizen participation for the project has been completed.
Rhine: data on corona-year 2020
The Upper Rhine reports 19.2 m tons of cargo in 2020, against 21.3 m tons in 2019. Despite the Corona crisis, this was more than the 2018 figure of 17.2 m tons. However, throughout much of 2018 the water level had reached a record low, minimizing cargo loads.
The figures for the German part of the Lower Rhine are 130 m tons in 2020, 141.1 m tons in 2019 and 131.9 m tons in 2018.

Lauterbourg: new intermodal terminal

At Lauterbourg, 60 km north of Strasbourg and close to the German border, the “Lauterbourg Rhine Terminal SAS” will operate the multimodal terminal at the Rhine with a yearly capacity of 80,000 TEU. It has a portal crane for barge loading, as well as two tracks of 400 m each. Loading operations at trains and trucks are by reach stacker.
The new company won the tender of “Port autonome de Strasbourg (PAS)”, who runs the Lauterbourg port. Co-owner of the new terminal operator is the Duisburg-based forwarder “Haeger & Schmidt”. The company plans to integrate Lauterbourg into its services between the Upper Rhine and the seaports.
EGTC Rhine-Alpine: vacancy available for project officer
The Interregional Alliance for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor EGTC is looking for a part-time project officer for its specific activities. The EGTC participates with 32 partner organisations in the project PLANET – Progress towards Federated Logistics Through The Integration Of TEN-T into A Global Trade Network.
The PLANET project is funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 programme. It runs until May 2023. The officer will be in charge of the implementation of the EGTC tasks defined in the project’s work plan in close cooperation with the Director and the EGTC office.
The position allows for flexible working hours and the possibility to work from home.Relocation is not a precondition.
