On Thursday 21 of April, EGTC members Regione Liguria, Regione Lombardia and Regione Piemonte signed in Alessandria an agreement strengthening and expanding their collaboration on transport and logistics field. During an half day workshop, Stati Generali della Logistica del Nord Ovest/The State of the Art of the North-West logistics and transport, the results of the “control room” carried out by the 3 Regions were presented together with all the stake holders insisting on the territory and the will to keep this collaboration on. In this 4th edition of the “Stati Generali”, a special focus was put on the need to work together in order to seize the opportunity raised by the near future completion of infrastructure in the North West of Italy. The 3rd “Valico dei Giovi”, Switzerland tunnels and the so called “Simplified logistics area” right behind the Alps and near to Ligurian ports, could really allow to change the paradigm of transport from Far East and by cargo ship. By the end of 2030s, then, the opening of the base tunnel between Lyon and Turin will definitely make North West of Italy one of the most important logistics hubs in Europe. Many other subjects have been discussed during the workshop, from road transport, to digitalisation, to training and education, to modal shift and “green transport”. In her intervention, the EGTC Director Cecilia Braun stressed the key objective of making transport more sustainable, in view of the goal of climate neutrality by 2050, more resilient and more efficient. She explained the role that the EGTC can play to improve a bottom up participation in regulation and funds and she brought to the audience a clear picture of changes put forward by the TEN-T Regulation proposal.

Train traffic rolls again on the Rhine Valley route near Rastatt after Easter closure

Due to track laying work on the damaged Rastatt tunnel construction site, train traffic between Baden-Baden and Rastatt had to be stopped over Easter. The line closure was necessary because the tunnel construction site in Rastatt should finally progress. Five years ago, one of the tunnel tubes collapsed during drilling work. The tracks above the construction site had sagged and workers pumped concrete over a length of 160 meters into the tube in which a tunnel boring machine was still stuck. Traffic on a main connection between the North Sea ports and Italy stood still for seven weeks. The tunnel boring machine has been buried there to this day and is now to be retrieved again soon. Since 19 April, rail traffic has been using an alternative route. The track work went according to plan, so that the salvage of the tunnel boring machine can now be started and the tunnel tube can then be finished using the cut-and-cover method. Several noise protection walls up to seven meters high and a total of around 800 meters long at the excavation pit are intended to protect residents from construction noise until the east tube is completed. In the future, trains will pass under the city through the Rastatt tunnel.
