The European Year of Rail – How to increase rail’s share in transporting people and goods in the Rhine-Alpine Corridor?

To mark the European Year of Rail, the Interregional Alliance for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor EGTC organized its Rhine-Alpine Talk on 25 June 2021 to debate on

How to increase rail’s share in transporting people and goods in the Rhine-Alpine Corridor?

A central slogan of the EGTC is “The Rhine-Alpine Corridor: Smart, Reliable and Green”. Accordingly, the rail as the backbone of our corridor was in focus of the contributions of high-level representatives from European, national and regional level. They highlight their vision and projects for the future of rail transport from their particular perspectives.

Pawel Wojciechowski, the European Coordinator for the Rhine-Alpine Corridor highlighted four clear priorities for modal shift to rail.

Dr. Michael Güntner, State Secretary at the German Federal Transport Ministry presented the project TransEuropExpress 2.0 or TEE 2.0 that introduces high-speed trains over long distances passing through at least 3 countries. TEE 2.0 aims at improving international and cross border passenger transport in Europe and the Rhine-Alpine Corridor.

Dr. Christiane Warnecke, Managing Director of the Rail Freight Corridor Rhine-Alpine presented the capacity challenges for rail freight transport on the Rhine-Alpine Corridor.

Stefano Castro and Paolo Palleschi from RFI introduced the rail infrastructure upgrades on the Genova-Milano route.

Georgios Kontos, Head of Mobility Department of the Regional Authority FrankfurtRheinMain presented the new concept to boost modal shift in the Region Rhine-Main called “Regional Rail Coach”.

The Talks were chaired by Jeannette Baljeu and moderated by Jörg Saalbach. Bart Kuipers from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, member of the EGTC Advisory Board wrapped up the event and gave an outlook to the already 10th edition of the Rhine-Alpine Talks in September 2021.
